August 10
Quick trip this evening on the lake and found some hungry Browns along with 1 small King that wanted to play. Temps were alittle crazy but 75-85 fow seem to have a lot of bait and fish glued to the bottom. DW SS nbks and a mix of stingers took all of the fish.
August 1
Spent the evening fishing a lot of different water in search of a good picture. 100-130 fow produced all of our fish for us including some small Kings and one beauty Atlantic. An assortment of Stingers on the riggers did the damaged for us.
July 17-18 Wayne County Proam
A weekend full of great Brown fishing was the word from Sodus Point. Day one resulted in a 200+ point box and a 5th place spot with a limit of huge browns for Team Runnin Rebel. We also pulled an 11th place LOC derby Brown that weighed in at 14#7oz. Day 2 was a tough bite for us as we struggled to catch legal size fish and box out resulting in a solid 17th place finish overall.
July 11
Spent the first couple hours in the 50'-70' range and pulled a few browns, 4 small kings, an atlantic and a 10# coho. All were taken 50'-60' down on gator & nbk stingrays. Headed north north looking for bigger fish and found some productive water around that 250' area. We boated about 6 fish w/ a 20# & 27.5# kings being the biggest. Divers @ 200' and 240' were the best w/ a live wire spin doctor and also took a couple of bows 60' down.

Tough day 1 for Team Yankee Troller. Weather was crazy and the bite was off for us. Day 2 was incredible day for us as we filled our box with steelhead and were back at dock by 1030. DW SSs really produced for us today on both the riggers and the wire rods. Our box earned us a 16th place finish overall and the comeback award for the tourney.

1/2 day trip this morning and the fishing report isnt much different then last weekend. Fished in tight (7-12 fow), without any luck, first thing this morning but the water has cleared right up. Trolled north and found a screen in 50- 75 fow. We kept busy with Lakers and I heard of some other fish being caught in the mix (atlantic, coho, brown, steelie). 70-75 fow was the best and Flasher/ flies were the ticket (Green on white Spin Doctors and Green mystic Smartfish loaded with green flies). 130' and 160' on the wire were hot and the 300' copper took 5 shots. Good size to most of the fish but nothing over 15#.
Laker Fest May 16
No Silvers to be found this morning but lots of Lake Trout to be had. Doubles and even one triple, late in the day, led to a great morning trip! 73 fow and mag size NKs off the riggers and wire divers! Super spook and watermelon were our 2 best spoons. 2 Lakers in the mid teens (14# and 16#).
May 2 Longbeard Season
Couldnt close the deal on opening morning although i heard plenty of gobbling and saw plenty of birds including 1 real nice tom (that strutted for over 3 hours, 100 yards away). This morning the whole flock was in the woods roosted and at daylight 6 hens (including 1 bearded hen), 3 jakes, and 2 mature toms flew off the roost and into my field less than 80 yards away. After a couple hours of watching birds, one of the jakes came over to strut for my 2 hen decoys. Well that got the attention of one of the big toms, and in the process of scaring off the jake, he ended up well within gun range. 1" spurs and 9 1/2" beard. Great day and certainly one of the craziest mornings i have ever spent in the turkey woods, that ended in success.

Sandy Creek Pen Rearing Update
We successfully released our Steelhead and Kings this evening. We are now waiting for our direct stocking numbers, in the next couple of weeks, of Browns, Steelhead, Kings, and Cohos.
April 30
Lots of colored water in tight and east of the creek this morning. We played with a few hungry Browns in there this morning and also boated our fist King of 2010. The other captains also reporting catches of browns in 8-15 fow from the pumphouse to Braddocks point. Sticks off the boards and Stinger spoons off the riggers are taking the fish. Deeper water seems to be setting up quite nicely with good temps and great color but is still lacking bait pods and consistant catches. Lots of good fish entered on day one of the LOC derby and most are from out west.
April 18
Strong western wind, wicked western current, and a nice cold rain led to a slow start with less than positive weather conditions this morning. Trolling east of the creek and an hour in and we hadnt landed a fish. So we switch gears and headed west of the creek and before we reached Newman's, we had a quintuple. 3 Browns, an Atlantic, and a nice Steelie. Nice way to start the day for us! We continued to work a small spot between the mouth and Newman's resulting in 13 bites which was dominated by Browns. Orange sticks (jointed Rapalas and thunderstick jrs) off the boards and Stinger Nbk off the rigger produced the fish for us. The best depths for us was 8-14 fow which had good temps and stained water, just outside the mudline.

Late Season Pheasant Hunt
Finally had a chance this sunday morning to hunt with our friends at F&B Upland Birds. Seven of us along with 2 dogs resulted in a succesful hunt of 14 birds. Great guides, lots of birds and lots of shooting! The highlight for me was being able to spend the time in the field with my son, certainly something he enjoyed also. Looking forward to our next hunt in early fall.

Sandy Creek Pen Rearing 2010
Saturday March 6 at the Hamlin town hall was the first scheduled meeting for the Sandy Creek Pen rearing project. The DEC has commited to 7500 steelhead once again for our 2010 project. In addition this year we have plans to add a third pen to the project to pen rear 75000 chinook salmon. It is something that we have been hoping for, for many years.
These programs exist today because of the strong relationship between the DEC and the project's volunteers. If you would like to volunteer or you would like to donate to the program you may contact:

Tournament win at Conesus Lake February 20, 2010
Today was the Avon Anglers Conesus Lake Tournament. Over 140 participants in search of bluegill, perch, pike, and tiger musky for today's event. I had a very successful morning finding big bluegills in 10 fow and landed over 100 fish for the day. The day ended for me with a first place finish in the bluegill division with a winning weight of 2.15#.

Honeoye Lake February 9
Fished the Honeoye Lake ice fishing tourny hosted by Avon Anglers today. This tourny has 4 divisions including bass, walleye, bluegill, and perch. I concentrated my efforts in 12-18 fow looking for big bluegills. Wax worms and mousies on small jigs produced all of my bluegills along with some perch and a couple of bass. The day resulted in a 9th place finish in the bluegill division with a weight of 1.19#. Avon Anglers Link

Braddock Bay February 9
Had a solid pick going this AM at Braddocks. Ended up with about 50 fish with 29 keepers. Fatheads on the tip downs produced half the fish, and the other half came "hole hopping" and jigging mousies. One of the best outings on Bradddock's this year for me so hopefully its a sign that the bite is improving.

Irondequoit Bay February 3
Fished the Bay today and brought home 55 perch. Tip downs w/ fatheads were the ticket and a dozen or so jigging mousies. We got set up in 30 fow by 8am and after only a couple by 8:45, we decided to moved more north in 35fow. Thats where we stayed for the day.Lots of good ice out there.

Silver Lake January 16
Fished the Avon Anglers "poorboy" tournament today on Silver Lake with Captain Scott. Avon Anglers host a series of ice fishing events and this happen to be the first I have ever fished of theirs. This was a bluegill/sunfish event with the overall combined weight with your best 5 fish brought to the scales and also a bonus "big fish" payout. Tons of fish caught during the event and the I finished 15th overall with a weight of 1.54#. My fishing partner took 1st place overall with 1.94#. Overall nice event and good fishing, probably will be back to fish another event this year.
Braddock Bay January 1
The bay has had plenty of fishable ice since the middle of December. The perch bite has been very inconsistant w/ jigging rods and also with tip downs. The perch have really made you "work" for them. The northern pike fishing has been hot. Lots of pike being taken with tipups and alot being caught by perch fisherman also.

Opening Day Duck Season 2009
Opening day duck season this year was filled with plenty of birds and alot of shooting. We spent the day in a duck boat, tucked into the reeds, sitting over 10 dozen decoys, on the south end of "lake X". Not a ton of ducks flying but the geese were very cooperative.

End of the 2009 fishing season
Good times and great fishing were shared with family, friends, and clients as the end of another safe and successful season arrives. Lets all hope spring arrives early for us!
Sandy Creek September 4
With the hot bite offshore, we headed out to 400 fow and began our morning there. We continued to work our previous days waypoints along with the bait and hooks on the screen. We had great action all morning between 400-440 fow. Stinger glow gators on the riggers 49-65' down were hot along with the wire dipsey rods 180', 216' and 250' pulling a green mystic Smartfish w/ a mix of green flies. Our day ended about noon, going 17 for 21 with the bite consisting mostly of Steelhead but also 1 Coho and 1 King.
Sandy Creek September 3
With yesterdays success, we headed to our waypoints from the day before and lucky for us the fish were still there. We spent the day fishing waypoints and bait between 420-450 FOW. The riggers 60-90' down loaded with Stinger NBKs (stinger and stingray size) and the 216' wire dipsey rod w/ green mystic on green Smartfish w/ Legacy fly were our hot setups. The morning's catch consisted of 7 Steelies, 3 Kings, 1 Atlantic, and losing a few others.
Sandy Creek September 2
The reports from the inside waters have been very inconsistant so today we headed offshore in search of some solid King and Steelhead action. We found a good mix of Kings and Steelies between 450-460 FOW. 75', 90' , and 105' riggers with a mix of Stinger spoons (including the NBK and glow gator) supplied us with most of our action. High dipseys (100') and the 600 copper loaded with spoons also took fish. We finished up our morning 9 for 15 with a little trouble of keeping some Steelies on the line.
Sandy Creek August 22
Nothing new from the Sandy Creek area, the fishing just continues to be consistant. Most of the fishing seems to be in 400+ fow where the catch is Kings and Steelhead, and inside of 130 fow where the catch is mostly Kings and Steelhead w/ an occasional Atlantic or a Brown in the mix. On saturday morning, we concentrated on the inside water, looking for mature kings. The majority of our action came mid morning, between 95-105 fow as we fish waypoints between Yanty creek and Devil's nose. Green on white Smartfish pulling a Legacy fly took a few shots on the 260' wire rod. Stinger NBKs on the 55 rigger and Stinger glow gator on the 45 rigger were a hot setup this morning. We ended our morning, 9 for 12 with our bite consisting of Steelhead, Kings (w/ a couple in the mid 20s), and a Laker.

Sandy Creek August 14
We spent this morning working 80-200 fow on a north/south troll. A green on white Smartfish pulling a green Legacy fly and a white double crush Smartfish pulling an Atommic ssw fly, both took some fish early. As the sun came up we had a good downrigger bite going with small Stinger spoons 35-65' down. We finished up theday with a good mix of both Kings and Steelhead.

Sandy Creek August 12
From the Sandy Creek reports it sounded like everyone was working the inside water this week, fishing the bait and hooks, rather than temp. We headed out and set up just inside of 110 fow and found hooks and bait down 60-80' down. We quickly boated a steelhead and lost 3 others in a matter of 30 mins. Stinger glow gators and white double crush smartfish down 65-75' range attracted all the attention. We circled on our waypoints and boated a small king on a Stinger NBK 65' down, on a cheater, off the riggers. On our third pass the 65' rigger fired, we were hooked into a major and he just about spooled us on his first run. We cut our morning short and headed to the weigh station. Our King, officially 32#10oz on the derby scale and currently first in the Orleans County Derby. Although we cut our morning short, we did boat 2 Kings, 2 Steelhead, 1 Laker, and dumping 4 others, working 100-140 fow.

Sandy Creek August 8
I had all the intensions in the world of running offshore first thing this morning but instead I stopped to take a look inside. In 85 fow we had bait clouds and big hooks so we set up and fished the warm water for an hour and never moved a rod. We quickly abandoned the inside water and started a north troll. On our way out we picked up a few fish but with nothing really showing on the screen, we continued north. 450-470 fow straight off the creek proved to be our best area of the day. The fish were 40- 80' down w/ 50-60' being the best target depth. Stinger glow gators on the 45', 50', and 60' on the riggers did most of the damage. 10 color leadcore pulling a red headed silver bullet and ten color leadcore pulling a purple NK nbk also took fish. The 350' copper pulling a white double crush Smartfish and an atommic ssw fly took an 11# Steelie and the 260' wire dipsey pulling a green double crush Smartfish pulling a lime green fly took a teenage king. We had a pretty consistant bite throughout the morning once we were in 330'+ and finished strong after a slow start. We ended up 14 for 17 with our catch dominated by Steelies topped with a few Kings and a 9# Brown.

Sandy Creek August 1
The fishing continues to be great out of Sandy Creek with most of the captains reporting high catches of Kings. On saturday, with the news that the cold water had rolled in again, "the Legacy" left the dock and headed north. We setup in 100 fow and found the down temp to be 42 degrees down 70'. We continued to to work 100-120' on a western troll (from the creek to troutberg) and had a successful morning. Stinger glow gators were the hot bait of the day accounting for more than half ours hits. The 10 color leadcore really turned on as the day went on and seemed to be the choice for the steelhead bite. A green double crush smartfish on the wire out 200' pulled two kings for us also. The kings were on the smaller size today in comparison to the past week or so with only one king over 10#. Beside kings and steelies we also boated a couple of browns and 1 laker to add to our 10 for 13 day.

Sandy Creek July 24
Captain Jax joined me this morning and we enjoyed another good day out of Sandy Creek. Cold water has moved inside and is quite high in the water column so we set up 70 fow and trolled NW in search of some active fish. Our morning started when we doubled up in 114 fow on the 30' and 40' riggers, both loaded w/ Stinger glow gators. For the next few hours we had a steady pick of fish 30-75' down on the riggers w/ Stinger glow gators and NBKs (stinger and stingray). A green double crush Smartfish pulling a green glow fly took a lake trout for us but that was the only fish on a flasher/fly. Most of our action was between 100-137 fow west of the creek and trolling west into the current. We finished up the day 9 for 14 w/ a mixed bag including Kings, Steelhead, a Laker, and a Brownie.

Sandy Creek July 22
Armed with reports that there was still good fishing in 200-300 fow we headed offshore this morning to this previous weekend's waypoints and setup in 240 fow. With an improved down temp but a screen that was virtually void of life we spread everything out (35'-100 down) looking for some active fish. It didnt take long for probe rigger parked at 75' to fire with a Stinger stingray NBK. Acting like big kings do, it started a big run, broke us off, and took our hardware with it. The riggers werent hot today but they did manage a few. Riggers 75', 50', and 40' down w/ NK NBKs and Stinger glow gators took fish. The diver rods and the 450 copper took most of the fish. 210' dipsey rod w/ a green double crush smartfish and 240' dipsey rod w/ a green on white smartfish took a couple of fish each. The fish over 20# today hit the 450' copper w/ a white double crush Smartfish pulling an Attomic SSW fly. We ended our morning 9 for 13 with nothing but quality fish. The majority of the catch being big kings (all over 15# w/ the biggest being 24#) but we also landed 2 nice steelhead (1 being 10-11#).

Sandy Creek July 19
The fishing has been consistantly good out of Sandy Creek. On sunday we hit the water about 6, set up in about 75 fow, and trolled northwest looking for some good down temp. When we hit 240 fow we had our first rod fire so we turned east and went with the current. For the next couple of hours we worked a steady pick of Kings and Steelhead. Riggers were loaded with Stinger NBKs and Stinger glow gators and took about half of the total hits for the day. The 250' dipsey rod w/ a green double crush Smartfish and the 220' dipsey rod w/ a white green & crush Smartfish, both pulling green glow flys, fired multiple times a piece. The 450' copper w/a white double crush Smartfish pulling An Attomic SSW fly fired a couple of times today also. Some other captains said the bite really turned on for them up until about 10 when the wind change and so did the lake conditions.

Sandy Creek July 11
The reports from Sandy creek for the past couple of weeks have had everyone covering alot of water and fishing deep to find temp but the catches have been dominate with kings and steelhead. On saturday we left the dock, with a strong southern wind (which brings cold water into the shallows). We set up in 50 fow over a great screen of bait and fish with 59 degree water on the bottom. On our first pass we pulled a king and a coho from that water. Both fish came from the deep riggers (45' and 50') pulling Stinger NBKs. We pulled a couple more fish from that area (another king and a steelhead) before heading north in search of "better" water. We picked up a couple more fish on our north troll (a steelhead and another coho) to finish off our morning. Stinger Nbks on the deep riggers and Northern King purple thunders on our shallow riggers were our hot setup for the day. All the fish came off the riggers and we went, without a hit, on our leadcore and our dipsey rods.
Sandy Creek June 28
The Fishing report from Sandy have been very good for the past week and include some incredible Steelhead fishing from the creek to Braddock Bay. With the western winds friday and saturday (which brings us warmer water from the west), I knew that the fishing would change for us on sunday. We headed on sunday out to the area which had been virtually flooded with steelhead all week (60-80 fow) and setup on a north troll looking for some active fish. We found some fish in 180-220 fow and quickly boated a couple out of that water. We continued north troll without any improvement on the fishfinder and when we hit 325 fow we decided to go back inside of 100 fow and intice those inactive fish into playing. We dropped our speed down to 2mph (on the downspeed), completely ignored temperature, changed up everything, and targeted the fish and the bait on the screen. We ran almost an entire purple program w/ NK DL28 and NK L28 in kevorkian, purple nbk, and purple thunder on the riggers and dipseys and a purple crippled alewife on the 10 color leadcore. Riggers were hot but everything took fish. We ended the day 10-13 (w/ the biggest being a 9 1/2lb brown) 3 lakers, 3 bows, 1 coho, 1 atlantic and 2 browns. We only needed a king to hit for the Lake Ontario cycle.
LOC Summer Derby June 20- July 19

Orleans Pro Am June 14
This morning, I teamed up with Capt Scott of Team Silverfox/ Legendary and fished the Orleans ProAm open division tournament. This is a one day tournament consisting of a 3 fish limit and a scoring system of 10 points per fish and a point per pound. We knew in order to be successful we needed 3 teenage Kings and we needed to boat them early in the morning. With that in mind we left the dock at 4:30 and headed for our spot in the dark. Our first fish of the day, (which also happen to be our biggest) hit a ten color leadcore rod pulling a blueberry muffin spoon. We found some active fish in 105-115 fow and purple and chart spoons put most of our fish in the boat, including 2 kings for our box. The third fish for our box was an 8# laker who fell victim to a green on white spinny. We ended the day 6 for 7 with 4 kings and 2 lakers and headed for the weigh in. We Managed a 37.97# box, a total of 67.97 points, and a big fish weight of 15.08#. Our score was good enough for a second place finish overall getting beat by just a pound.
Sandy Creek June 12
Snuck out for a couple of hours this morning , in full search mode, looking for some big fish for the weekend. We found and fished a good screen in 135 fow and quickly pulled 5 fish ,in about an hour,(2 Kings, 2 Cohos, and 1 steelie) out of that water. NK nbk parked at 40' on the rigger was the hot lure for us but the 45' and the 55' rigger also took a fish a piece. We fished some great marks in 90-100 fow, without any takers, to finish out the morning.
Sandy Creek June 7
Since Memorial day weekend, there have been some really great reports out of the Sandy Creek. The King bite has been very consistent and they have dominated most of the boats catches. Reports of some Kings in the low 20s too. On Sunday morning we left the dock just after 5:00 and headed for 100+ fow, west of the creek. We entered the lake to an incredible sunrise and more importantly a 1 foot chop and an overcast sky. We reached 150 fow, on a north troll, and setup on a very nice screen. While sending the second rigger down the probe rigger fires. King on! 70' down on an NK nbk. We continued a hot and heavy rigger bite for the next hour or so. It took us about an hour to get 6 rods in the water. Riggers 40- 70' down, loaded with NK and Stinger NBKs was the hot ticket. After the first hour the bite slowed down for us and the wire/dipsey bite turned on. 155' on the dipsey rods with green/crush on white smartfish took 4 fish for us. All of the action for us seemed to be between 40-70' down. We fished above and below that but couldnt seem to pull any of those fish. We ended the day with 11 for 15 (Kings, 1 steelhead, and 1 Coho).

Sandy Creek May 25 Memorial day
With the action of the past 2 days We headed right out to our waypoints looking for fish. We stopped in 90 FOW looking for a screen to fish and found some good bait and hooks in 135 FOW. Sent the first line down on the rigger, 65' down, and it fires. King on! Handed the rod off, went to the other side of the boat, and sent another rigger down and it fires before i finish setting the drag. Nice way to start! Doubled up! Rigger bite started really hot for us this morning with riggers parked at 45, 55, 65, and 75. (all loaded with Stinger and NK nbks). Leadcore 8 colors only went 3 times with a Stinger nbk. Wire diver out 220' w/ crush/green on white Spinny fired once all day but it put a 20# king in the hands of a 12 year old kid. We pull the lines at 10:00 and ended the day 13 for 15 w/ kings, a coho, and a couple of steelies.
Sandy Creek May 24
This morning we left the dock and headed right for the eastern end of our waypoints. We setup in 105 FOW and made a unsuccessful first pass through our waypoints. As we reach the end of our way points we turned east and tried another unsuccesful pass. Down temp was about 47 degrees down 75' which was about 3 degrees colder than yesterday. I thought we would swing it deeper and take a peek. When we hit 130 fow we hooked up. The screen and the action was best between 130-150FOW and east of the creek. We ran a very similar program to yesterdays. 8 color leadcore w/ a Stinger nbk really turned on for us as the day went on. Producing the first and the last fish of the day. Wire divers parked at 220' (one being a crush/green on white Spinny and the other a Smartfish crush/green on white) accounted for four of the fish today. The rigger action picked up alittle bit today and saw action between 35-60' down w/ Nk nbk and Stinger nbk. Ended the day around 11:00, 15 for 20 w/ another mixed bag of steelies, kings, cohos, 1 laker, and 1 atlantic.

Sandy Creek May 23
Left the dock, headed straight out of the creek, and set up in 90 FOW. With some reports of some decient fishing in 90-100 FOW, I thought it would be a good place to start. It didnt take long and we were hooked up on the 6 color leadcore. We spent the morning working a small strip of water 90-110 FOW between the pumphouse and the woods, straight out in front of the creek. Not a ton of action on the riggers but 25- 80' down did produce some fish. NK purple thunder, NK nbk, and Stinger nbk all took fish. Wire divers out 280' w/ crush/green on white spinny accounted for a couple fish (kings) and 210' w/ crush/green on white smartfish w/ a Atommic ssw fly (Yankee Troller will be happy) accounted for the two big fish of the day (king and big laker over 15#). The hot setup for us today was 6 color leadcore with a Stinger nbk, taking over ten hits. The problem with the setup was that the fish didnt want to stay hooked up on it. I did managed to snag another Captains leadcore with my very own leadcore today. I ended up cutting his spoon off my leadcore rig, sending down on my probe rigger (couldn't help myself), and it pulled a king for us too. Thanks Scott
! Just before 11:00 we triple up and ended our day on a high note. A happy crew today including a very happy rookie who realized that theres more to fishing than bass fishing. Ended the day 17- 25+. Mixed bag of Kings, Steelies, and a couple of lakers.

LOC Spring Derby April 30- May 9

Sandy Creek April 26
Myself and Captain Jax left the mouth of the creek about 6:30 in a thick fog and immediately began trolling, towards the pump house, with the usual sticks off the boards and running a single rigger. We worked that 8-12 fow and with nothing for our efforts on the western troll, we turned at the pump house and headed back towards the mouth of the creek. On our first pass of the creek, we pulled a brownie out of the small mud plume (which was almost 3 degrees warmer). The fish came off the rigger with a stinger nbk parked 6' down and 50' back. We spent the remainder of the day working that warm pocket of water (which the north wind was slowly pushing back into the creek). On our last pass of the day we doubled up on a brownie and a real nice smallmouth off the riggers. The brownie took a stinger nbk off the riggers and the smallmouth took a stinger irish car bomb off the other rigger. Nice end to the day!

Sandy Creek Pen Rearing update
On Saturday evening, the Sandy Creek pen project succesfully released 7500 healthy, pen reared steelhead. Once again the project was a success and we look forward to recieving 50,000 chinook salmon to add to our pen rearing project in the spring 2010.

Sandy Creek April 25
Left the dock this morning and headed west of Newman's point. We set up in about 12 fow and headed east. With the waves out of the west and the 25-30 mph wind out the southwest trolling speed was an issue. Once we got our speed figured out, we quickly boated our first fish of the day. That fish was an 8# brownie that took a renegade stick off the planer board in about 10 fow out in front of the "woods". The fish managed to tangle 2 downrigger lines and 1 line off the opposite planer board (what a mess). We spent alot of time today fighting the wind and the waves. We did end the day 3 for 4 all brownies and all on the same stickbait. We lost one on a stinger irish car bomb off the rigger 4'down and 50' back. The other boats i talked to all seemed to do about the same. A fair amount of boats out this morning but most of us got blow off the lake by 8:30-9:00.

Sandy Creek pen rearing update
Today, April 2, we recieved our yearly steelhead stocking from the NYDEC. Using the hatchery truck they direct stocked approx 7500 Steelhead into the creek at the state boat launch. We also recieved approx 7500 for our pen rearing project which were place in our 2 pens. These fish will be fed and closely monitored during the 3 weeks they spend in the pens. These fish are 3-5" long and will really fatten up before their release date. Pen rearing projects, like the one we have here in Sandy Creek, are directly responsible for the world class fishery we have on Lake Ontario. Pen rearing provides us with future year classes of trophy trout and salmon.
Shakedown Cruise 2009
With the weather as good as its ever been in March, I was ahead of schedule on getting the boat ready for the season. Yesterday (with help from Scott from Silverfox), we launched the boat, took a quick cruise out of the creek, and tied her off to her summer home. This morning I was itching to get the boat out on the water make sure everything was working (and of course get a few lines wet too). We were only out for an hour or so but we did pull our first fish of the year, a brownie, from the plume out in front of the creek. The fish came off the planer boards with the help of a new stickbait. With the lack of rain, the shallows really lacked color and good temperature, and were pretty clear for the most part. Saw 4 other boats out in the lake fishing along with a couple fishing in the creek. Im hoping to get on the water next weekend and troll the shallows a little bit more. Let the fishing 2009 season begin!
Sandy Creek Pen Rearing 2009
Saturday March 7 at the Hamlin town hall was the first scheduled meeting for the Sandy Creek Pen rearing project. We discussed our schedule and the preparations that are needed to recieve 7500 steelhead in the middle of April (the official date is unknown as of right now). It was announced that in 2010 the NYDEC has promised 2 full pens of chinook salmon for our program. Pen rearing projects around Lake Ontario aid in the stocking efforts of both Steelhead and Chinook Salmon. Pen rearing allows these fish to"smolt" and to grow to larger sizes before their release date. Unlike direct stocking, pen rearing increases survival and returns rates of these fish. These programs exist today because of the strong relationship between the DEC and the project's volunteers. If you would like to volunteer or you would like to donate to the program you may contact:

Irondequoit Bay March 4
With some warm weather in the 7 day forecast, today might be the end to this years ice fishing for me. We spent the day on the ice in Irondequoit Bay and with some great perch reports coming in for the past week, it was hard not to. We fished the south end just north of the Fish & Game club in about 30' of water today. The action for the day consisted of small flurries of good fish. We iced about 40 keepers with a good average size to them. Most of the fish caught today were over 10" and the highlights of the day were a 13 1/2" and a 13". Last year we had many "limit" days with fish sizes 8-10", and although the overall catch numbers seem to be lower this year, the size class has really made up for it.

Braddock Bay January 31
Really nothing new to report here. Although perch size seems to be getting bigger, numbers are still fairly low. 20 keepers per man per trip out seems to be our average and we've had to really work hard for them. Tip downs and jigging rods tipped w/ niagaras and fatheads have been the most consistant combo for me. No shortage of ice out there, (without a measurement i would guess around 12") and no shortage of guys fishing on the weekends (it looked like a refugee camp on saturday). I think im ready for spring and some bigger fish.
Silver Lake 1-30
Took a trip out to Silver Lake today to explore the hard water. Weather conditions were terrible. Windy, blowing snow, and below zero wind chills made for a tough day on the ice. The fishing however proved to be decient. We setup on the south end, targeting pike and bluegills. We did ice a few pike early on our tip ups and the bluegill bite turned on midday. As a group we manage over 100+ bluegills. Sight fishing for the gills was key and jigging rods w/ small perch jigs
tipped w/ mousies or wax worms.
Braddock Bay January 23
Fished Braddocks Bay this morning. We ended up icing 14 keeper perch (biggest being 12") and throwing back about half a dozen more. I caught a fat 32" pike on my jigging rod (needless to say was alot of fun) and lost another. Niagaras on perch jigs on the jigging rods and tip downs took all the fish. The fish there this year all seem to be good size but the numbers havent been impressive yet.

Ice fishing 1-12
This morning we fished the south end of Irondequoit Bay in 25 fow in front of the Fish & Game club. The action wasn't hot and heavy but rather a slow pick for most of the morning. We managed to ice about 40 keepers w/ about the same number of throwbacks. Tipdowns w/ fatheads and niagaras took the majority of the fish but jigging produced a few also. Plenty of ice out there (5+") and plenty of guys fishing it too!
2009 Season
Deer Hunting Season '08
Bowhunting here in western New York has been open for a couple of weeks now. Alot of deer and a few good bucks have been seen. November 1 just happen to be one of the best days i have ever experienced in the deer woods. Theres nothing like being in the woods during the "rut". On November 2, I harvested a seven pointer with my bow that walked past the stand and presented me with a 10 yard broadside shot. Probably the best part of that day was bringing my son in the woods afterwards, and giving him a chance to share the thrill of the hunt.

End to the Fishing Season 10-12
Well the boat is out of the water, putting an end to another great year. The fishing season never seems long enough but unfortunately its time to get her prepared for the long winter. Tuesday we assisted the DEC in stocking 27,000 coho salmon in Sandy Creek (our future investment), and the conditions were next to perfect so i hope we have a great return in a couple of years. The NY bowhunting season starts for me in a couple of weeks so now my attention will be focused on that.
Sandy Creek 9-4 am
Left the dock at 6 and headed for the shallows in search of some big guys. Not much of a screen until 70-80 fow, so we set up there. It’s tough not to fish that water when it looks like that so we work that water for a couple of hours with only one king for our effort. Tough fishing inside so we turned north and headed for 300 fow. Started finding some bait and some hooks about 315-340 fow. 325 seemed to be our best depth and for next 2 hours manage to boat a few more kings and 1 steelhead, and we also dumped 3 others. Nk nbk and stinger nbk 40-90' on the riggers and we also did one fish on the 240 wire with a green on white spin doctor w/green fly.
Sandy Creek 8-7
The boat has spent the past month getting some new equiment. Today the new navy blue canvas was finished and it looks great. I installed new Dotline outriggers and an eight rod rocket launcher. In addition i also added a Berts track system w/ several Bert's ratcheting rod holders.
.

Sandy Creek 7-19 am
Spent the morning working 150-170 fow west of the creek. Real good screen 40-60' down, which was way out of temp, with good hooks and some bait. First fish of the day came on the 10 color leadcore w/ redheaded silverbullet, nice aerial steelie about 8#. We continued to work the same area (in circles) for the next couple of ours and boated a few more. We lost a screamer who took about 3/4 of the spool, in 1 run, off a downrigger rod before snapping off. Needless to say, he was a big guy. About 800 the fishing turned off till about 930 when it picked up again. Ended the day 11 for 13 w/ 2 steelies and the rest were kings. Kings 15-24# and the steelies 8-10#. Leadcore and jplug took 1 fish and green on white spin doctor and fly 150' out went four times. the rest of the fish came on a mix of spoons off the riggers 35-77' down- stinger nbk, green glow nk, Irish car bomb, super spook, chart/ purple nk.

Sandy Creek 6-27 am
Short trip this morning, Left the dock @ 5 And returned @ 10. Didn’t see alot of boats out today (maybe 5 or so) and the radio was quiet also. After spending an hour or so in search mode, we found and fished a good screen in 225 fow. (64 degree surface and 51 degrees down 99') pulled fished between 35' down and 99' down. Hot spoon bite off the riggers and the wire but couldn’t get bubba (leadcore) to fire. 45-55' down was the hot spot. Nbk, icb, mixed veggie, no name purple mag all took fish. Ended the day 8 for 14 steelies and kings w/ big fish of the day an 18# king.
Sandy Creek 6-21
The lake this morning had a slight ripple to it with almost no wind and sunny skies. Headed north, in search mode, stopping to look at 100 fow. For the most part the screen was empty. Continued north to 200 fow and the screen activity increased so I decided to setup there and troll north. in 250 fow we dumped an aerial steelie, followed by another one in about 275 fow, and another in about 315 fow. Not the greatest start but we finished up 6 for 9 w/ 2 small kings and the rest steelies. (Including a couple just over 10#) spent the majority of the day on an n/s troll between 250-300 fow. Nothing fast and furious just a slow pick form 5:30 till about 9:30. Irish car bomb, nbk, git-r-done all took fish. 1 fish off leadcore 7 colors. The rest was a rigger/ spoon bite 30 -77' down. Down temp was pretty warm and consistent (53 degrees down 100') the screen was busy (lots of deep bait w/ lots of fish in the top 90').

Sandy Creek 6-5
Left the dock this morning with the plan to fish Devils Nose. With surface temps under 50 degrees we looked for fish and bait inside of 100' of water. We set up in 80' of water and had our first king take a NK habenero off the downrigger by 5:30. We then focused our attention on fishing 80-100' of water and from 5:30-10:00 were we pulled a steady pick of fish. We ended the day 7 for 10 boating a mixed bag of kings, steelhead, and a couple of laketrout. The majority of our fish came off the wire dipsey rods and the leadcore leaving the downriggers accountable for only 1 fish. Our hot combos for the day were the wire dipsey rod out 200' w/ a green on white Spinny w/ a "Legacy" fly and an 8 color leadcore with a Stinger NBK.
Sandy Creek 5-25
Another fantastic day of fishing out of sandy. The weather conditions very similar to yesterday but a little warmer and less windy. Spent the morning fishing the same area as yesterday (in 90 fow) and almost the same report as yesterdays. ended the day 18 for 21 (mixed bag of steelies, cohos, 1 slob lake trout (LOC derby fish), and kings (nothing over 15#). nk super spook, dl28 Kevorkian, stinger chart nbk, green glow nk, all took fish off the riggers 35'-87' down. leadcore alone was 4 for 6 -nk dl 28 Kevorkian and nk purple/chart 28. dipsey rod took 1 fish all day and it was the big king of the day- 150' nbk spin doctor and green fly.

Sandy 5-24
Beautiful morning with plenty of boats out. Spent the majority of the day working 90 fow (48.1 degrees on the surface and the down temp wasn’t much different). Ended the day 11 for 14, mostly kings w/ a few steelies mixed in. biggest king of the day was 22#. Leadcore 5 colors, riggers 25'-85' (top to bottom), and dumped 1 on the wire rod early (spin doctor and fly 150’). Stinger nbk 65', super spook mag 75'+, and stinger chart nbk 37' were all hot. Greens and chart seemed to be the choice colors. Lots of action before 9am and then someone turned the switch off.
Sandy Creek 5-18 am
Just an all around great day of fishing. Weather on the lake was great too. Ended the day 11 for 14 w/ 2 steelies, 1 slob laker, and the rest kings (up to 15#). Worked 90-140 fow (leadcore 5 colors, riggers 35-90'). Mag size laser spooks took the majority of the fish. (The fish just seemed to want mag size spoons today)

Sandy Creek 5-10
Thought we would move a little bit off shore this morning and get away from the inshore crowd. We fished 70-80' of water and focusing on the top 20'. Steelies provided us with all of our action this morning. Flatlines off the boards, leadcore , and the downriggers all taking fish. Lots of mention on the radio this morning of decient steelie action from everyone.
Sandy Creek 5-3
Wow, where are all the boats? Quiet morning on the lake and on the radio too.
We hung in the inside waters 8-12' fishing the plume off the creek in search of some Brownies. Surface temp was 45.5-47.5 degrees,w/ good color too. Managed a good pick of small browns out of that colored water. Black and chrome stickbaits off the planerboards were the ticket and we took 1 fish on a NK kevorkian off the downrigger.
Sandy Creek 4-21
Let the season begin! Although the boat has been ready for the water since April fools day, the return of winter has kept us out so far. Today was the 2008 "shakedown" cruise. Its alway feels nice to get the boat out on the water after a long winter. Its even better to double check the equipment and get a couple of lines wet too. We fished the shallows for alittle while and put our first on board for 2008, a fiesty steelhead.
